In a recent development, Facebook introduced a new feature called ‘Sponsored Stories’ which will allow companies to take user generated content and turn it into an advertisement for its products. The good news for the advertisers was announced through a ‘Introducing Sponsored Stories’ video.
Through its help section, Facebook explains that sponsored stories are
word-of-mouth recommendations about brands that come from your News Feed.
Content that one would be able to see as part of Sponsored Stories would be
- Page likes
- Page posts
- app interactions
- Place check-ins
In a world where word of mouth and recommendations from trusted sources still score over advertising, Facebook Sponsored Stories seem like a logical way of introducing another revenue channel within Facebook. Though, the Sponsored Stories can be compared to Promoted Tweets by Twitter, which also uses content from within the network for advertising.
Sponsored Stories as an advertising channel may bring in money or not but as a user it does excite me to share more and more.
